Ductless Air Conditioners

Ductless air conditioners and heatpumps, or mini split systems as they are often called, have become very popular over the last few years. This popularity is mostly due to the fact that they fill a very big niche in the air conditioning industry. Ductless air conditioners can be installed in locations that cannot support the installation of ducted air conditioning systems.

Over sized air conditioners are a common problem in many homes. This situation can be avoided by only dealing with contractors who do proper load calculations when pricing an air conditioner installation for your home.

Ductless air conditioners can be installed in residential and commercial locations where there is not enough room for distribution ductwork systems to be installed. These are usually existing homes or businesses where spot cooling is required. A good example of this would be a new room addition in a home or office.

Like larger air conditioning systems, ductless air conditioners have an indoor section and an outdoor section connected by copper piping and electrical wire.

These units operate very quietly and often you can’t even hear them. The indoor section of ductless air conditioners is mounted on a wall close to the ceiling and out of the way. The outdoor section sits on a deck or on patio slabs on the ground and do not take up much space.

A ductless air conditioner can have as many as four indoor sections connected to one outdoor section. This type of arrangement would have more than one compressor in the outdoor section and each indoor section operated independently from all of the other sections. This allows for more efficient energy usage because you do not have to have all sections operating at once. This reduces energy consumption and your power bill.

Another huge benefit of ductless air conditioners is they can be installed in a fraction of the time that it would take to install a central air conditioning system. A central air conditioner would take a two-man crew week to install with ductwork from start to finish. A ductless minisplit system could be installed from start to finish in a day with time to spare.

Most ductless air conditioners are only about seven or eight inches thick and have a nice looking plastic cover that looks sleek and high tech. Most ductless units also have remote controls with fan speed and humidity control settings. This is a great feature that makes it possible to for these units to be mounted high on walls out of reach.

As with any air conditioning unit ductless air conditioners must be sized properly for the space that they will be servicing. Oversized or undersized units will operate erratically and equipment damage could occur.

Some of the common brands of ductless air conditioners are Carrier, Mitsubishi, Samsung, and Tadiran.
